Giving back to the community adds to the bottom line through a multitude of benefits. Employees feel more connected with their company when they are part of a greater purpose. Especially in busy times, it's vital that leaders understand what giving means to their team. No matter your company’s size, creating opportunities to give back fuels growth, reduces friction, and enhances flexibility.
Companies like Bonterratech help Fortune 500 companies optimize philanthropy through impact reporting technologies. Their FrontDoor solution vets nonprofits using the IRS Master File and global databases, ensuring donations go to credible causes.
We’re also seeing increased interest in holiday giving through socially responsible purchases. Oprah’s “Favorite Things” now include many women-owned, Black-owned, and LGBTQ+-supporting businesses, and even brands supporting global relief efforts like those in Ukraine. Companies like FEED donate 10 meals per bag purchased.
Corporate programs from Microsoft, Apple, Home Depot, and others offer inspiration. Microsoft provides employee matching and volunteer grants. Apple has raised over $800 million and donated $25 per hour volunteered. Home Depot supports disaster relief and veterans’ housing with up to $3,000 in matching contributions per employee.
Consumer-focused brands are stepping up too. Bombas donates essentials to people in need, and Patagonia has donated over $140 million to environmental causes.
At Montage Insurance Solutions, we embrace this spirit of giving year-round. We donate a wheelchair each month through Free Wheelchair Mission—over 168 and counting. We’ve supported the construction of kitchens and schools in Africa, and given to organizations treating waterborne diseases. Our support extends to Doctors Without Borders, Orbis for the blind, Smile Train, and numerous local nonprofits like Therapeutic Living Centers for the Blind, Valley Village, and groups helping the homeless across Los Angeles.
One of our most meaningful partnerships is with Make-A-Wish, helping grant wishes for children on a path to recovery. These efforts show how giving can inspire hope in the hearts of others.
Smaller companies can implement simple programs too. In 2020, we gave employees a giving allowance. The result was remarkable: supplies for dog rescues, gift baskets for blind residents, contributions to mental health centers, and starter kits for mothers rebuilding their lives. We support local shelters, food banks, and even serve meals at Thanksgiving.
When recruiting, we’ve found that Millennials and Gen Z deeply value social impact. Causes like animal rescue and environmental protection resonate strongly with them. As a Baby Boomer, I’ve always believed in giving back, and I believe it’s foundational to American values.
If you're unsure where to start, just ask your employees. Many will step up to lead the charge. With the holidays here, it’s not too late to give back or start planning your philanthropic strategy for 2025. It’s through our blessings that we’re able to bless others—locally and globally.
